Romario Guthrie

Meet Romario. At first glance, you might notice his easy-going demeanor and warm smile. Romario is a devoted family man, cherishing every moment spent with his wife and children. A sports enthusiast with a passion for running that began in high school, he finds solace in music, which calms his mind and allows for deeper thought. Romario loves to travel and learn from new experiences, always eager to share his insights with others. He has always been a motivating presence, inspiring those around him with his words of encouragement, though the circumstances of his recent journey have made it challenging to fulfill that role as he once did. Above all, Romario is a people person, easily connecting with those he meets and brightening their days with his genuine spirit.

Romario's life took a dramatic turn on December 26, 2024, when he began experiencing a persistent tenderness in his abdomen. As the pain lingered and he noticed an unsettling weakness, he realized it was time to seek medical attention. After a series of tests, he received the life-altering diagnosis of T-cell lymphoma.

The past two years have been fraught with challenges as Romario faced the harsh realities of cancer treatment. Enduring four rounds of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, he has also been grappling with the effects of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). This illness has impacted various parts of his body, including his mouth, throat, chest, skin, eyes, and lungs. Currently reliant on oxygen, Romario finds himself unable to work, a reality that has not only transformed his daily life but has also placed immense stress on his family.

Despite these trials, Romario continues to embrace hope and faith, trusting that brighter days lie ahead. "I’m taking it one day at a time and trusting God through every step of this journey," he reflects. His unwavering determination to recover is fueled by the love he has for his family. They are his number one motivational tool, reminding him of the importance of getting better for their sake.

Romario's experience has been profoundly supported by his family, including his parents, wife, and children, who have rallied around him during this difficult time. He acknowledges that he couldn't possibly attribute his strength to one person alone; rather, it is the collective effort of his entire family that has helped him navigate this challenging path.

Recently, Romario was touched by the generosity of the Fightstrong Foundation, which provided support during this incredibly trying time. The donation included a ShopRite gift card, an Amazon gift card, and everyday household essentials. "Your kindness, generosity, and support mean more to us than words can truly express. I am beyond grateful for the blessing you have been to my family during a time when we truly needed it," he shares in heartfelt gratitude.

Looking ahead, Romario holds onto dreams of recovery and inspiring others through his journey. He hopes to share his story and the wisdom gained through his experiences, emphasizing that holding onto faith is the best thing one can do. He aspires to return to work, hoping to get back to driving trucks, a passion he deeply misses.

In closing, Romario sends a message of encouragement to the Fightstrong community, urging them to continue their vital work.

"Many families going through similar challenges need a helping hand, and God has blessed a team like yours to offer that service to us. To all the fighters out there, just trust God, have faith even when it doesn’t seem to make sense, and always tell yourself you got this!" His journey is a testament to resilience, love, and the power of community support.

We love you, Romario!
