Greg Kania is a 47-year-old husband, father, son, and friend from Bedminster, New Jersey. A natural problem-solver with a love for classic cars, home improvement projects, and travel, Greg is someone who finds joy in the little things — like fixing something mechanical in the garage, seeing his kids experience new things, or sharing a good laugh with family and friends.
In February of 2025, Greg’s life changed unexpectedly. After his children came down with the flu, Greg began experiencing persistent heartburn. At first, he assumed it was lingering symptoms or maybe indigestion from over-the-counter cold medicine. But when the discomfort continued, he scheduled a routine endoscopy to get it checked out. When he woke from the procedure, he received the shocking news: a large tumor had been found in his esophagus — and it was cancer.
A full staging process confirmed the diagnosis: stage 4 adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and stomach, with metastases to his lymph nodes and liver. The news was devastating — but Greg met it head-on with determination and clarity. He began researching treatment options immediately and soon chose Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he was able to begin chemotherapy and immunotherapy just weeks after his diagnosis.
Since then, the road has been far from easy. The physical effects of treatment are draining, and Greg describes the emotional toll as an “unpredictable and endless rollercoaster.” Treatment weeks often leave him feeling like half of his time is “lost” — but he remains active as much as possible, knowing that movement and routine help him stay grounded.
Through it all, Greg has leaned on the people who matter most. His wife Chemagne is his rock — his caregiver, best friend, and source of unwavering love. His children are his daily light, giving him strength, laughter, and motivation. His parents continue to be his greatest cheerleaders, and friends, neighbors, coworkers, and the kids’ school communities have shown up with meals, messages, visits, and support in countless meaningful ways.
As Greg puts it, “If there’s a silver lining in all of this, it’s seeing the love and support come back to you that you’ve spent your life putting into the world.”
Outside of treatment, Greg is still deeply connected to the things that make him feel like himself: collecting and restoring classic cars, working around the house, and soaking up every moment he can with his family. Whether it's a milestone celebration or just a quick errand with his kids, Greg treasures the time he has and the people he shares it with. His dream is simple: to keep fighting long enough to celebrate the big moments — and be there for the small ones, like answering a late-night call from one of his grown children needing help unclogging a toilet or fixing something around their own home someday.
To support Greg and his family during this chapter, Greg’s wife Chemagne filled out our online form and shared more about their needs. She asked for help with everyday essentials — including gift cards to ShopRite, Amazon, Target, Wawa, and for gas — to ease the daily burdens that come with treatment, caregiving, and trying to keep life as normal as possible for their children. We were honored to fulfill this request and provide a bit of relief and peace of mind to a family that continues to face the unimaginable with so much strength and grace.
Greg’s message to others is a reminder of just how powerful the human spirit can be:
“Even something as daunting and overwhelming as being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer doesn’t automatically mean the game is over. It just means you have to dig deeper and find that intestinal fortitude to find your fight and show yourself and others just how strong you are. Even when our bodies might not feel strong, our mind can still be as tough as ever.”
We are proud to stand with Greg in his fight. His courage, humility, and heart are a testament to what it truly means to Fightstrong. We love you, Greg!
